Jay-Z, who has long dabbled in New York sports, is starting a new sports representation agency called Roc Nation Sports, Darren Rovell of ESPN reports. But that’s only half of the big news. The other half is that the first athlete he’ll represent is none other than Yankees slugger Robinson Cano, who formerly paid Scott Boras to do his negotiating work.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Cano has ditched Boras.

Cano spent time this offseason talking about a new contract with the Yankees. While New York generally does not give extensions until players finish their current deals, with Cano a free agent in 2013, Cano is seen as such a pivotal piece of the Yankees’ future that general manager Brian Cashman was willing to change the rules. Cano reportedly turned down an offer from the Yankees already. Boras was known to be a hard negotiator who gets top dollar for his clients. Jay-Z’s group could be even tougher.
